(Detroit-MI) After clinching the US Open Cup berth, the two time reigning PASL Eastern Division Champions, the Detroit WAZA FLO, will host the Pacific Division Champions, San Diego Sockers, in a long awaited rematch set for Saturday, March 2, 2013 at the Melvindale Civic Arena, 7:35pm kickoff.
This year’s Open Cup (the fifth annual) paired twenty-six teams from the PASL (Professional Arena Soccer League), the Premier Arena Soccer League, and independent teams across the country in qualifying rounds of a knockout style tourney that led to Detroit facing San Diego in what promises to be a real barn burner.
The last time these two teams paired up on the pitch was 2012′s National final, the Ron Newman Cup, held in San Diego’s legendary Del Mar Arena. Detroit fell to San Diego 10-7 in the foul laden, contentious battle. The thirteen time National Champions, San Diego Sockers, recently held a US pro sports record of 48 consecutive wins which was broken January 27th in an overtime loss to the Dallas Sidekicks in a 6-5 stunner.
“We have been waiting for a rematch the entire year”, said Detroit’s head coach and player Dominic Scicluna, “we are always confident with our Detroit home crowd behind us”.
The Detroit WAZA FLO, in its fifth season, is the only professional soccer team in Michigan. Detroit’s league, the PASL, is the largest indoor league in the country including teams from Canada and Mexico. Detroit’s diverse roster includes men who have played both collegiately and professionally both here in the US and internationally. “We have players who have either played for or hail from Jamaica, Brazil, Australia, Malta, Kenya, Serbia, Liberia, and Canada”, said head coach Dominic Scicluna, “it is a pleasure to play with such talent”.
